Types Of Ornamental Steel To Choose From

by Gabe Lawrence

There are several styles of ornamental steel that you're probably familiar with. Hammered bars, steel scrolls, balusters, and pickets are all common steel-ornamental styles. However, if you would like to try something different, you can also contract ornamental-steel services to create a custom fabrication for you.

Hammered Tubings

Hammered tubings and bars can be square, flat, round, or rectangular. You're able to choose between conventional and vintage patterns. This is often used to create decorative fences. This type of tubing looks very rustic and decorative.

Steel Scrolls

Scrolls are a common type of ornamental steel structure that is often used to decorate steel structures. A common approach is to use scrolls to create flowers. They are used in all sorts of situations, including:

  • Railings
  • Fences
  • Gates
  • Panels
  • Furniture design

They can be made with both round and square materials. Businesses will often stock standard-size scrolls, but you can usually have them custom-made for your specifications.

Steel Balusters

A baluster is a molded shaft. It is associated with stairways and is used for other architectural features. While usually made of stone or wood, it can be made from metal as well. Types of balusters include pickets, forged bellies, and newel posts. They can be tubed, fluted, hammered, or wavy. You can choose to either have a traditional type of baluster or a modern type. Also, you can choose a custom style.

Custom Ornamental Steel

The conventional styles might suit your needs. But if you need something more unconventional, you'll be able to have anything you need constructed. Then, you'll be able to create the look you want for your property. In some cases, you have no choice but to have a custom product created. For example, if your steel will be incorporated into a custom staircase, the steel will also need to be sized to match the shape of the staircase.

Coloring Options

Ornamental steel can be in any color you want. In the past, ornamental steel was colored by painting over it. However, the paint can chip and flake. It's more effective now to use a powdered coating so that you can choose any color for your ornamental steel and have the color last. Choosing a color or design type that is offered by an ornamental steel service is the least expensive, but sometimes you simply need to spend extra for a very custom style that fits your needs best.
